blog Challenge #7

It's Friday the 13th! Do you have any superstitions?

I do and I don't. I don't have the normal one's like crossing a black cat, or Friday the 13th, or those type of things. I think I believe more in not wanting to jinx stuff. So once I bet on the Niners and they lost, so I will never bet on them again. I believe that certain things bring me good luck and some bring me back luck is that superstitions? I'm not sure, I try to talk myself out of doing them but it never works.

Blog Challenge #5 & #6

I am falling behind here. I am going to catch up and do a two-in-one post :) .

Blog Challenge #5 What is your favorite Halloween candy of all time?

I think of Whoppers when I think of Halloween, don't ask me why. I remember getting them in my Halloween bag growing up. I love how they melt in your mouth! Yummy. I remember having candy for MONTHS when we went trick or treating. However the Whoppers would all be gone first. I haven't had any in years..

Blog Challenge #6 If money were no object, what would you do with your time?

The short answer is I would travel more. I would volunteer, stay at home with D, and travel a bunch. I would want him to see the world, and spend months at a time oversees in different countries. I would want him to be around different cultures and lifestyles, and I think he would learn so much from it. I also would have a blast, I think Keith would have a great time exploring different places too. A constant vacation :)

Also in this post wanted to mention some changes on the blog. Most of you get emails when I update. I think I like this because you get to see what is going on automatically, but sometimes for post that are not that interesting I think I should turn that feature off and you would log on via the web to see post. I can not do it one by one, so I am undecided at the moment.

I have been changing the blog a lot, the layout, pictures in the header, and tags on each post. This would help you find post that are like the one that you are reading. Here is the blog address check it out : www.dnmthornton.blogspot.com

Blog Challenge #3 ..Halloween Costumes..

What was your (or your child's) "best" Halloween costume ever?

I have never really loved costumes, I know I know. I love the holiday, but the dressing up part not as much. I think I was a "dead" cheerleader for about 3 years. Which was really just my cheerleader outfit and some fake blood. The one I remember most is when Niki and I went as crayon's. That was fun, but hot. I liked being a witch to, and a pumpkin with all the newspaper stuffed inside. I don't have any pictures handy, although I ran across one the other day.

Darrian's best costume, hard one. I love the lion from last year, and I love the firefighter this year. I don't think I could choose :)

Blog Challenge #3 .. A Grown Up.

What is a specific moment/event that made you realize you were truly "a grown-up"?

I think I have had many moments over the past 12 years that have made me feel grown up. All the milestone's moving out at 18, getting married, and having a baby have made me feel grown up a little bit more. I think the biggest moments are when I realize I am responsible for my actions, and also the mentoring of a baby and child. That it is not just about me, but someone else. Those moments. I don't think they have been for me hit me in the face moments, but more of a gradual easing me into the grown up world. Sometimes it all goes so fast, I still say to myself "wow I am someones Mom, I am a wife, I have a career.. " , not sure when the moment will be that those things won't be a shock. I guess when I get to that moment, then I will be grown up :).

Blog Challenge #2 all about books

Do you enjoy reading?

Yes. I think I have always enjoyed reading from a young age. It is an escape and I love the books that you can't put down and transport you to other places.

What do you read and when?
I now usually only read on my BART ride to and from work. It gives me an hour each way to read. If a book is really good then I usually find time to read on my lunch break as well. I love to read "realistic fiction" books. I love when a book is believable enough to be a real life story, I especially like when it puts me in other people's shoes and I get to see the story in several "voices". That doesn't mean that I don't love my share of chic-lit :). I think the only thing that I would not buy into is sci-fi type lit. No Harry Potter here, and No Twilight either. I have thought of reading Harry Potter just because I have it, but I can't get into it (yet). You are way more likely to find my nose in Jodi Picoult's newest book.

What's your favorite book ever?

Well this is a REALLY hard one. I don't think I could pick just one.. how about a few that have really made an impression on me.

To Kill A MockingBird for quotes like these two.. this book has always made a mark on me since the day I read it in the 6th grade (I have re-read it several times). Equality.
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it"

"They're certainly entitled to think that, and they're entitled to full respect for their opinions... but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience."

Tuesday's with Morrie A book about life's greatest lesson's. This was one I picked up in an airport on the way home from FL and could not put it down, and had it finished by the time I got home. Everyone should read this book, twice. Here are a few of my favorite quotes, but really this whole book is quotable.

"We...need to forgive ourselves...For all the things we didn't do. All the things we should have done. You can't get stuck on the regrets of what should have happened."

"There is no experience like having children...If you want the experience of having complete responsibility for another human being, and to learn to love and bond in the deepest way, then you should have children."

My Sister's Keeper Another book that I could not put down. I love the way she writes, each chapter a different voice and a different look on things.

"You don't love someone because they're perfect, you love them in spite of the fact that they're not"

Night I read this long before it was on the Oprah book club list, I think in about the 7th grade. It was so graphic and so telling... I remember thinking how does the human spirit survive such things?

"Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed....Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never."

Blog Challenge #1 ...Why do you blog?

I belong to an amazing community of woman (I have talked about them a few times here before), we were all talking about blogs last week. Most of us feel like our blogs become photo dumps (who me?) without much inspiration for anything else. A fellow Mom thought it would be fun to start a blog challenge to maybe get our minds inspired. This is the first week.

This week's prompt is: Why do you blog? What do you hope to get out of participating in this challenge?

Why do I blog?
It started 3 years ago (can you believe that?) when I was looking for a way to keep us connected with friends and family who did not live nearby. It is hard to talk to everyone everyday, or even once a week, and when we did talk and they asked what have we been doing I would say "nothing" . Well that doesn't open up the conversation very much, and I am on the go constantly so why didn't I have lots to talk about. I sort of started this hoping it would keep us better connected. Since then so much has happened and it is all documented right here. It has turned into being about mainly Darrian, and a few of my random thoughts thrown in. I find myself thankful for it now because it has documented so much of Darrian's life and it is easy for me to look back at the milestones (and when they happen). I still blog to keep connected, and often here from friends that they feel like they talk and see me often because of the blog.

What do you hope to get out of participating in this challenge?

I am hoping it will spark some new topics to write about, and help me expand it a bit from the same old, same old that I type about.
